Chestnut Hill Historic District

Registered as a National Historic District, Chestnut Hill features a generous number of superb Victorian and early 20th century homes and buildings within easy walking distance of the Germantown Avenue retail district. Take a stroll down West Willow Grove Avenue through the St. Martin's area, for instance, and you'll be rewarded with exceptional examples of houses and institutions designed in the 1880s by G.W. and W.D. Hewitt for Henry Howard Houston. Take note, too, of the wonderful crescent and court houses of Houston's son-in-law, Dr. George Woodward, designed in the early 1900s by Louis Duhring, Robert McGoodwin, and Edmund Gilchrist.

A brochure describing this and other walking tours is available from the Chestnut Hill Historical Society. 215-247-0417
