Gowen Historic District

Take a delightful walk through this "suburban community of first-class houses," developed between the 1880s and 1920s. The Historic Gown Estate, a 130-acre tract east of Germantown Avenue at Gowen Avenue, was initially developed by Reading Railroad president Franklin B. Gowen, of Molly Maguires fame. Construction in 1882 of the stylish Mt. Airy Station, attributed to Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, spurred several decades of distinctive development. The station and several Furness houses on the 7300 block of Boyer Street represent just a taste of the many architectural styles showcased on house tours conducted by local residents.
