Wissahickon Gorge

The Wissahickon Valley, part of Philadelphia's famed Fairmount Park system, is one of the few remaining urban wilderness areas in the United States. In 1972, the federal government recognized the unique beauty of this deep, wooded gorge and stream by designating the Wissahickon a National Natural Landmark, one of the first natural areas to be so honored. Comprising some 1,800 acres with 75 miles of trails, the Wissahickon is one of the most widely used sections of Fairmount Park.
