Grumblethorpe

Built in 1744 as a country home for wine importer John Wister, Grumblethorpe was the home of Philadelphia's prominent Wister family-including the renowned astronomer, horticulturist, and inventor Charles Jones Wister-for more than 160 years. A prime example of domestic Germantown architecture of the period, the house is constructed of dressed Wissahickon stone and oak from Wister's lands and was known as "John Wister's Big House" throughout the 18th century. Today, Grumblethorpe has bee restored and is furnished as it may have appeared in 1744. The grounds include a beautiful colonial herb and vegetable garden.
